POŠTELA AND IRON AGE BURROW CEMETERIES

The fortified elevated settlement of Poštela, near Maribor, was one of the most important settlements between the Alps and the Pannonian Basin during the Early Iron Age period from the end of the 9th to the middle of the 6th century B.C. At that time, several burial sites belonged to the community living in Poštela, which stretched from the Habakuk plateau down to Pivola, where today, the best-preserved Iron Age burrow cemetery is located. The burrow cemetery, which lies in what is today the UM Botanical Garden, extends over an approximately 9-hectare area, and includes a few dozen tumuli, from the smallest of approx. 5m diameter and around 0.5m in height to the largest, which can be seen on the west edge of the burrow cemetery, the diameter of which exceeds 30m and reaches up to 5m or 6m in height.
